rankbrain

Alphabet, formerly known as Google, is an artificial intelligence (AI) company.

I have informed my clients of this for many years. I also mention this in this article back in July 2015 regarding creating unique and valuable content: Can I cut and paste articles on my own website? I’m not saying “I told you so” – just pointing out that many people who are serious in the search industry have known this for several years.

They are so invested in AI, I tell people that they are an AI company that just uses their popular search to compile data and fund their AI venture!

Alphabet has been buying AI companies, robotics companies, hiring the world’s top neuroscientists for years.

In fact, Ray Kurzweil wants Google to answer your searches before you ask them. If you don’t know who he is, grab a cup of coffee and go read his Wikipedia page. Seriously. If you liked that, read his (strangely accurate to date) predictions. Whatever you do, don’t miss his 2099 predictions. No, this is not a nutjob in an insane asylum; you use his inventions every day, and, he is Google’s director of engineering. Ray envisions a world, in this century, where things like “life expectancy” and “natural humans” are practically irrelevant.

What is RankBrain?

According to this article on Bloomberg, RankBrain is an artificial intelligence learning system which interprets ambiguous search queries. As of October 2015 it is estimated that RankBrain plays a role in 15% of all search queries.

An example of an ambiguous search query, provided in the above referenced article, is “What’s the title of the consumer at the highest level of a food chain”.

Long ago search engines like Google could interpret synonyms and words extending beyond the search query.

Good News and Writing for RankBrain

For business owners – if you are doing SEO the way I have preached here for years you are in as good a shape as ever. In a nutshell that means attracting good, authoritative links as organically as possible and answering everything your customers potentially ask of you on a website that works properly.

Case in point: In a recent article I put together, I analyze a website that I built in 2001. Over the course of 15 years approximately 1,500 articles were written on it answering questions that people were asking. In this article I mention that there really isn’t anything about the way I do SEO now than I did back then (technical SEO aside).

What Does RankBrain mean for SEO in 2015 & 2016?

Providing great, in depth, comprehensive answers to questions people are asking search engines is not getting old any time soon. (Well, until you’re a trans-human hybrid with Terabit Internet connected to your neocortex.)

An expert level web content writer knows how to beat a topic to death, understands user behavior, caters to searcher intent, and inspires action. Rest assured, we are few and far between.

And, of course, people who have been ranking their crappy 10 page website solely by building mediocre links will likely not have as rosy of a future.
