This Is What Viral Content Looks Like in Real Time Google Analytics

I have the fortunate opportunity to work with websites all over the world in a wide variety of niches. Some are business sites which get 10 – 15 great hits every day. On the other end of the spectrum I work with publishers which occasionally get 20,000 hits per minute. Their SEO and content needs are drastically different, but I still love watching the traffic pour in, the referrer data and observing all of the user metrics.

Here’s a GIF of a site which had 4,800 people on it at any given moment.

Later that number rocketed to 16,000.

That is more traffic per minute than most people receive in 10 years. 🙂

A normal web server would crash under this sort of stress which is why this website uses the Amazon AWS CDN.

I didn’t feel like recording the screen so this video below was taken using my cell phone (the GIF is a short clip of the video). This is a time lapse video:

I’d like to get hands on the Google Analytics data for some sites bringing in about 10 – 20 million hits per day. If you’re reading this and have access to such a site, please feel free to email me. I’d be happy to poke around under the hood. You never know what I’ll find in there, either! Sites which get 10-20mil hits/day include FoxNews.com and CNN.com.
